BANGKOK
Bangkok is the capital of Thailand. In Thai it is called Krung Thep which means "the city of angels". The European name originates from Bang Makok, which means "the city of the olive groves", and is what the early colonials named the city.
Bangkok has been the capital since 1782. The city is situated next to the river Chao Phraya, 40 kilometres north of the Bay of Thailand. The real Bangkok has around 5.2 million inhabitants (2004), although the entire area has a population of more than 10 million. The city is one of the fastest-growing and most financially important cities in South East Asia and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. The cityscape is very varying; modern skyscrapers, shanty towns, palaces and temples are all mixed in together. Bangkok's rich offer of entertainment and culture, modern and historical, makes the city a destination suitable for all tastes.
Bangkok on bike offers travellers an unusual and memorable excursion in one of the world’s most interesting cities.
